DNF Protocol

Time limits

At any checkpoint where we impose a time limit we will also provide a transport option to allow runners to reach the finish of that day’s stage (for the Stage Race) or Grächen (for the 170 km Ultra Tour and Mischabel 60). Please see the instructions for individual checkpoints for the details.

If a runner decides to withdraw at any other point of the race route then they must arrange transport at their own responsibility and cost.

If the medical assistance at any checkpoint (or stage finish line) determines that a runner should be withdrawn from the race for health reasons then this must be enforced even if the runner wishes to continue. In case of any difficult situations please contact Lizzy directly.

Stage Race

If a runner decides to withdraw from their race they must notify the checkpoint coordinator at that location. If a runner doesn’t meet the time limit for a particular checkpoint the checkpoint coordinator must withdraw them from the race and not allow them to continue. For the Stage Race runners are allowed to start the following day, but they won’t receive an overall classification.

  1. Please inform the Race HQ of any DNF by a message in the {DNF} WhatsApp channel (not the checkpoint group) stating [BIB NUMBER, RUNNER NAME (if known), LOCATION, TIME (of day)]. Please don’t add additional information in this WhatsApp group, it is simply a notification channel so that we can keep a check on all DNF’s.
  2. Please keep a list of all DNF’s at your location (BIB NUMBER, RUNNER NAME) so that we can check everyone reaches the finish line of that day’s stage either by UTMR transport or at their own responsibility.
  3. Please do not remove the tracker as the runner is allowed to start the next day’s stage and we will need to continue to track them.
  4. Only remove a runner’s tracker if they are out of the race completely or don’t start on Day 4 (the final stage from Macugnaga to Grächen). In this case the Stage Race Manager must collect the DNF trackers in the ziplock bag provided and make sure these are returned to Mick Kenyon on the finish line in Grächen. Runners are liable to pay a 135 euro charge if their tracker is not returned, so please take care with this! Once the tracker is removed the runner is no longer under the responsibility of UTMR.
  5. Runners who DNF for whatever reason are suffering in some way physically, mentally or emotionally. Please look after them, check they can eat and rest as they need while they wait for transport. Encourage them that the mountains will always be there for them to return to!
  6. Please keep a list of DNF numbers at your checkpoint requiring UTMR transport to the finish line of that day’s stage so that we can adjust the buses as necessary. The checkpoint coordinator needs to liaise directly with Lizzy or the local transport provider as specified in the instructions for that checkpoint location.
  7. At the finish line of each day’s stage the Stage Race Manager needs to keep track of any runners who are DNS for the next day. UTMR doesn’t usually provide transport in this situation but liaise with Lizzy directly so that we can work out what’s possible so that the runner can reach the relevant village.
  8. Prior to the start of each stage the Stage Race Manager should notify race HQ of any runners who are DNS by sending a message in the DNF whatsapp channel marked [DNS, BIB NUMBER, RUNNER NAME (if known), STAGE NUMBER].
